GARYTolleston places first

Middle school students from across the school district participated in the 13th annual African-American Super Bowl at West Side High School.

Tolleston placed first for the second consecutive year. The school also received a travelling trophy for most improved ISTEP scores.

Rhenwrick at IUPUI

Isabell Rhenwrick is a point guard and shooting guard studying sports management at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis.

Rhenwrick, a 2005 graduate of West Side High School, led the Lady Cougars last March with 16 points and two assists in a second-place finish to North Central during the state championship basketball game.

She was a member of the National Honor Society at West Side and played volleyball.

Award nominee

Saundra Horne, RN program chairwoman of practical nursing at the Gary campus of Ivy Tech Community College Northwest, has been named the Ivy Tech Northwest President's Award nominee.

The award is given annually to one faculty member in each of Ivy Tech's 14 regions that has shown excellence in teaching and community service.

As the President's Award nominee, Horne is automatically nominated to represent Ivy Tech Northwest for the statewide Glenn Sample Award, to be presented in June.

She has been a full-time faculty member in the Health Sciences division since fall 1988.

Defensive driving

Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana, 1440 E. 35th Ave., is offering the Defensive Driving 4 (DDC-4) class from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Bethune pilot program

Bethune Early Childhood Development Center has started its first early childhood intervention pilot program.

The remainder of Session 1 dates are today and March 23 and 24; Session 2 dates are April 27 and 28, May 4, 5, 11, 12, 18 and 19. The program gives parents and children the chance to bond and interact. It transitions 2-year-olds into the prekindergarten setting.

After completing the four-week session, the child will be enrolled at the center for the upcoming school year.

Children who are 2 but will be 3 on or before July 1 may attend with a parent. Immunizations must be up to date. Tuberculosis test results and original birth certificate should be presented at registration.

Tutoring available

Spirit of God Technology Center, in the Commons on 20, offers free computer-assisted tutoring and homework help to all Gary-area students in grades three to eight.

Training program

The Back to God Movement 2000 Inc. has started a training and career-placement program for ages 19 to 21.

Training will focus on residential construction. Participants who complete the program will be eligible to receive a nationally recognized credential in the construction trade.

Parent-child classes

Miller Preschool's next eight-week session of parent-child classes for ages up to 3 1/2 starts in March.

Classes will meet from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday mornings in the lower level of Bethel Lutheran Church, 411 N. Montgomery. Classes include playtime, crafts, songs, seasonal activities and parent discussions. Space is limited; the cost is $120.

Free computer classes for adults will be offered at all Gary Public Library branches.

Model railroading

Indiana University Northwest, 3400 Broadway, is offering a model-railroad class from 7 to 9 p.m. Mondays, March 20 through April 17.

The class, taught by a model-railroad enthusiast, is designed to turn novices into informed modelers. The cost is $69, including supplies, and $20 per child, ages 12 and older, with adult registration.

Used cell phone drive

Thea Bowman Leadership Academy is sponsoring a used cell phone drive. Bring any old, used, undamaged cell phones to the school, 975 W. 6th Ave., from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

Chess lessons

The 21st Century Charter School@Gary is offering free chess lessons and a chess club to students and Gary residents.

Art comes to CCSJ

Art exhibits this school year at Calumet College of St. Joseph include the works of CCSJ students and local high school students. Exhibits will be displayed in the Bernard Gallery.

Free lectures at CCSJ

Shots required

Effective July 1, state law required students to be immunized as protection against hepatitis B infections.

Children in Indiana entering ninth through 12th grades must be immunized against hepatitis B. The vaccine series consists of three shots. After the first shot, there is a month waiting period for the second, and a four- to six-month waiting period between the second and third shots.

NORTHWEST INDIANA

Literacy workshop

Elementary school educators in Northwest Indiana will learn about the latest developments in improving children's literacy on March 21 at Valparaiso University's Christopher Center for Library and Information Resources.

Kristina Smekens, a literacy consultant and president of Smekens Education Solutions, will present the workshop's keynote talk 'Building Readers and Writers: Seeing the Big Picture.' Smekens will discuss components of good reading and writing, how to demystify good writing and understanding the reciprocal nature of reading and writing.

Session presenters include faculty from VU's Department of Education and Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Gary Community Schools, East Porter County Schools and Franklin Township Community Schools.

Cancer scholarships

The American Cancer Society Great Lakes Division college scholarship program is accepting applications for the 2006-2007 school year.

Applications are due by 4 p.m. CDT Tuesday, April 18.

Since 1997, the American Cancer Society, Great Lakes Division Foundation has proudly supported young cancer survivors with $1,000 scholarships as they pursue career goals.

To date, more than 300 first-time scholarships and 200 renewal scholarships have been awarded to students in the Great Lakes area of Indiana and Michigan.

Scholarships are awarded annually based on academic performance, community service and leadership, among other criteria, and may be renewable up to three more years.

To qualify, an applicant must be a cancer survivor age 20 or younger (as of April 18), a U.S. citizen and legal resident of Indiana or Michigan; attending or planning to attend an accredited college or university in Indiana or Michigan in fall 2006.

Career planning site

A regional partnership of schools, business and the Center for Workforce Innovations, along with the Lake County Integrated Services Delivery Board, has developed a career information Web site.

With educators, students and parents in mind, the cwcompact.com site offers regional information on careers as well as information on career ladders.

The Community Workforce Compact has provided the career Web site as a resource that enables planning for careers for middle school through college students.

St. Mary scholarships

The St. Mary Medical Center Auxiliary is offering scholarships. Anyone going into a health care field may apply.

Applications are available at the Medical Center gift shop, the east front reception desk, and at the west front reception desk, 1500 S. Lake Park Ave., Hobart. Forms must be returned by April 30. Awards will be presented in June.

Aviation scholarships

The Aviation Scholarship Foundation will award a $5,000 Harold Hurd Airplane Scholarship in October.

Students ages 14 to 16, freshmen and sophomores in high school, who want to fly and get a pilot certificate should visit the Web site, www.teenpilot.org. Funds are reserved for students from low-income families.

DeVry scholarships

DeVry University offers programs in business, technology, health care and management.

Scholarships are offered to new students who meet specific criteria. For consideration, students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

Some available scholarships include the following.

DeVry University Community Scholar Award -- $1,000 per semester, valued at up to $9,000 and awarded every year to a student in the upper 50 percent of his or her graduating class; must earn a final grade of B or better in one year of math; available to one high school senior from schools in Lake and Porter counties.

Dean's Scholarship -- $1,500 per semester, valued at up to $13,500, to a student with qualifying ACT or SAT scores, 24 or 1100, respectively, in math and critical reading.

Cisco Scholarship -- $1,200 per semester, awarded to a student who has been enrolled in a Cisco Academy.

Rotary scholarships

Rotary Northern Indiana District 6450 has applications for the 2007 to 2009 Rotary World Peace scholarships.

They are for study at one of the seven Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution to obtain a two-year, master's-level degree in international relations, peace studies, conflict resolution and related areas.

Rotary scholarships are for two academic years and provide funding for round-trip transportation, tuition and fees, room and board, and other limited expenses. Applications are due by March 31.

Poetry contest

Creative Communication is conducting its spring essay and poetry contest, 'Celebration of Young Writers.' More than $3,000 in prizes will be given to poets, writers and schools in Indiana. The poetry divisions are grades kindergarten to 3, 4 to 6, 7 to 9, 10 to 12, and adult. To enter, submit one original poem, in English, 21 lines or less.

The deadline is April 5.
