ANGER MANAGEMENT WHAT BEGAN AS FRIENDLY FOOTBAL HAS TURNED INTO A RIVALRY AS HEATED AS THE REAL GAME.(SPORTS) - The Wisconsin State Journal (Madison, WI)

One of the more contentious moments in the rivalry between the University of Wisconsin and Iowa football programs didn't happen at Camp Randall Stadium or Kinnick Stadium.

It occurred inside the Hawkeyes' indoor practice facility on Oct. 27, 2000, when a flag football game between the teams' managers was stopped late in the second half because a skirmish had erupted.

'There weren't any punches thrown,' said Rick Nelson, who injured his hamstring early in the game and admits his trash talk from the sidelines didn't help matters. 'But there was a lot of pushing and shoving and guys in a pile on the ground.'

Welcome to the rivalry within the rivalry between the Badgers and Hawkeyes that will resume tonight in Madison.

Long before there was a Heartland Trophy, the statue of a bull that the teams began playing for in 2004, there was another symbol of competition in the series. The battle for the Rusty Toolbox began in 1991 and was the brainchild of John Chadima, who at the time was the director of football operations under coach Barry Alvarez, and his counterpart at Iowa, Bill Dervich.

Chadima, a former manager at Iowa who worked under Dervich, and his former boss thought it would be fun to start a friendly game between the team's managers. Little did Chadima and Dervich know the series would still be going strong 18 years later - or that it would become so emotionally charged at times.

The 16th installment of the game is scheduled to begin at 10:30 tonight inside the McClain Center - just more than 12 hours and a stone's throw away from where UW and Iowa will meet for the 85th time Saturday at Camp Randall.

'You hear about it and everybody gets you excited, but when you actually play you realize it's a little bit more than just a flag football game,' said Daron Jones, a manager for the Badgers from 1999 to 2003 who now works for the UW Athletic Department as an event manager. 'I think that's probably the reason why some years it took on a life of its own as far as the physical play.'

The series got off to a controversial start. After Iowa won the first meeting in 1991, the game wasn't played the next season because of friction between Alvarez and Hawkeyes coach Hayden Fry. Early in the week leading up to UW's game at Iowa, Alvarez had wondered aloud during a news conference whether Iowa had violated NCAA rules by not counting a running session on Sunday as a practice session. Fry, who counted Sunday as the mandatory off day for the players, felt he was within the rules because no coaches were present while the players were running.

Needless to say, Fry wasn't happy with Alvarez and played a role in the game between the managers being called off.

But it resumed in 1995 - Iowa didn't appear on UW's schedule in 1993 and '94 - and has been going strong ever since. UW enjoyed some early success, winning three times in four seasons between 1995 and '98, but it has been all Hawkeyes ever since. Iowa has won nine of the last 10 games, and even the Badgers' win during that span was controversial.

Iowa accused UW of bringing in a ringer for the 2003 game, which the Badgers won 18-0 thanks largely to the play of Thomas Hammock. A former standout running back at Northern Illinois, Hammock played defensive end for the UW managers and spent the better part of the game in Iowa's backfield.

Chadima received a number of angry e-mails from Iowa the next week but stood his ground. Although Hammock later would become a graduate assistant on the football staff, he was technically filling in as a manager at the time of the 2003 game and thus was eligible to play.

It wasn't the first time there was a serious side to what started out as a friendly game.

'We were told that we had to win,' said Matt Klein, a manager at UW from 1994 to '98. 'It was a serious thing. We wanted to win for us, obviously, but we wanted the players to see it the next day because they were always asking. It was a very prideful thing.

'It built up from a friendly flag football game into kind of a big deal.'

Even Klein was surprised how big. The game now includes referees - part of the crew that does the Sun Prairie-Verona high school game will officiate the Rusty Toolbox game tonight - and sometimes has more than 100 spectators.

The one huge advantage Iowa has is its managers play together in a recreational flag football league on campus.

'They're pretty good,' said Greg Morris, Iowa's equipment manager. 'They usually only lose one or two games a year.'

UW has had some notable players in the series, though they're hardly regarded for their athleticism. That list includes Klein, who serves as the right-hand man to coach Mike McCarthy in his role as football administration coordinator for the Green Bay Packers; Bill Nayes, a manager at UW from 1989 to '93 who's in his first year as the special assistant to San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Singletary after a three-year stint as UW's director of football operations; Brett Schroedel, the general manager of the Eau Claire Express, a rival of the Madison Mallards in the Northwoods League; and Nelson, who served as an administrative assistant under coach Bill Callahan when the Oakland Raiders went to the Super Bowl following the 2001 season and is the younger brother of former UW safety Scott Nelson.

'I know John (Chadima) and (equipment manager Mark Peeler) didn't hire guys to be managers because they're good athletes,' Nayes said. 'Somebody recommended them because they're really good workers.'

UW will try to end a five-game losing streak tonight and regain the Rusty Toolbox, which is filled with seashells and sand from Iowa's trip to Miami for the 2003 Orange Bowl and Chadima's hair that was shaved off after UW's victory in 2003.

'After the games you can kind of be buddy, buddy,' said Rick Nelson, a manager at UW from 1996 to 2000. 'But during the game, I always kind of looked at it like that game set the tone for the whole weekend.'

Priest honored

Aaron Priest has been honored with the Student Affairs Outstanding Leadership and Service Award from Valparaiso University.

Scholarships earned

The GFWC St. John Jr. Women's Club awarded their annual scholarships.

DePauw awards

Jamie Lynn Oslawski and Patrick Andrew Croner have received academic awards from DePauw University in Greencastle during a ceremony held May 3.

Oslawski received the Paul C. Glick Award, named for professor emeritus, class of 1933, at Arizona State.

The award is given annually to a senior who demonstrates academic excellence in the sociology and anthropology department.

Oslawski is a Lake Central High School graduate.

Croner was recognized for accepting membership to Chi Alpha Sigma, the national collegiate athlete honor society.

To become a member, the student athlete must have a 3.4 or better GPA, and have earned a letter in a sport by the junior or senior year.

Croner is an Andrean High School graduate.

Musleh graduates

Rami Musleh has earned a bachelor of medical science degree in physician assistant studies from the College of Health Science at Midwestern University during commencement exercises held May 28.

Susan McConnell has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

McConnell, a 1976 graduate of Crown Point High School, is the Susan B. Ford Professor of Biological Sciences at Stanford University. She earned a degree in biology from Harvard University's Radcliffe College in 1980, and earned a Ph.D. in neurobiology in 1987 from Harvard.

After postdoctoral training at Stanford's School of Medicine, she joined the Stanford faculty in 1989.

NISEC offers services

Induction planned

The waiting game: graduates of new leaders for new schools sport enviable resumes and a zeal for education reform. But will school districts give them the key to the principal's office?(Feature) - Education Next

ON THE FIRST Monday of the 2003-04 school year, Pablo Sierra was not where he hoped to be. Instead of greeting students as the new principal of a Chicago public school, Sierra was driving downtown for another round of meetings with district officials, trying to keep his spirits up and hoping that a position would open soon.

As a newly minted graduate of the widely heralded New Leaders for New Schools training program for aspiring principals, Sierra (and the developers of New Leaders) had understandably expected to find a slew of opportunities awaiting him. He thought that his prestigious MBA, private-sector experience, and nine years as a classroom teacher would distinguish him from more traditional applicants for the principalship. The intense yearlong 'residency' program developed by New Leaders would make up for his lack of traditional administrative experience.

As of September, however, Sierra had all but given up on his first choice: being tapped to run a neighborhood school. He had started looking for a start-up or charter school opportunity and was hoping to avoid taking a job as an assistant principal. The silver lining is that Sierra was eventually able to secure a job as the assistant principal of a charter school and is now set to head a new charter school opening next year.

Sierra's situation was not unique among his New Leaders peers. Of his graduating class at the program's Chicago location, less than half had found jobs by late June. Those without preexisting connections to the community or to the school bureaucracy were struggling even to get interviews. Surprisingly, Sierra's private-sector training and experience were 'not being perceived as positive,' he said. 'All the positions are going to experienced [assistant principals].'

Since its founding four years ago, New Leaders has shown that there is no shortage of accomplished individuals like Sierra who want to be principals. The program continues to expand each year and has become a national voice for the reform of principal training. The remaining questions are whether school districts will let New Leaders run their own neighborhood schools--and are the New Leaders fellows really ready for the job?

New Blood

New Leaders for New Schools is the brainchild of a group of graduates from Harvard's business and education schools including CEO Jonathan Schnur, a former Clinton administration official. The New Leaders idea is to recruit accomplished individuals from both the private and public sectors, including public education, and provide them with the leadership training necessary to take on significant school management roles. 'We're looking for the best people, wherever we can find them,' says Schnur.

The motivation behind New Leaders was to supply new blood to cities that were reportedly facing shortages of qualified principals ready to turn around dysfunctional schools. New Leaders fellows would also receive the kind of leadership and management training that principals hired through traditional routes seldom enjoy. Each cohort of 'new leaders' is chosen through a highly competitive application process. Those selected take courses during the summer, then spend a year in full-time 'residency' at a school under the guidance of a mentor principal.

While securing principalships for the program's trainees has been challenging, finding accomplished aspirants has not. In 2003 the program received more than 1,000 completed applications for just 55 spots. Overall, roughly half the applications--and half of those accepted into the program--have come from nontraditional candidates, meaning that they were coming to the program from outside education or from another part of the country. Even those with traditional education backgrounds have flocked to New Leaders, seeking a program that is more hands-on and collegial than many of the principal-training programs based at schools of education.

As a result, the pool of New Leaders includes a concentration of individuals with backgrounds not often found among public school principals. For instance, Danny Kramer was a VISTA coordinator, a member of an Internet start-up, and a website designer for Oprah Winfrey. Drema Brown graduated from Yale Law School and ran a children's program in New Haven, Connecticut. And Cindy Moeller, a member of the current cohort of fellows, entered the program after earning her MBA at Northwestern and serving as a vice president for human resources at Baldwin Pianos. New Leaders usually requires its applicants to have two years of classroom experience in order to meet guidelines for certification as a public schools administrator. The program also works in partnership with local universities to secure formal certification for its graduates.

The current fellows range in age from their late 20s to their mid-50s. Two-thirds are African-American, Hispanic, or Asian-American, and two-thirds are women. Most important, they are among the most confident, determined, and accomplished school leadership candidates you can imagine.

What Shortages?

Despite their accomplishments and passion, New Leaders fellows have had a hard time breaking into traditional public schools, especially those fellows who lack contacts or extensive experience in education. It's not that New Leaders can't get work; nearly all of the New Leaders have secured education-related jobs. But just 5 of the first 15 graduates and just over half of the 32 graduates in 2003 found positions running schools of any type.

Of course a 50 percent placement rate for aspiring principals is no small accomplishment, and there has been undeniable progress in getting fellows hired at neighborhood schools. Patrick Baccellieri, a graduate of the program's first year in Chicago who had previously run a nonprofit, was hired to run a traditional school, as was second-year graduate Jarvis Sanford, a former diversity consultant for the Anti-Defamation League who holds an MBA and a Ph.D. Drema Brown is currently running a traditional public school in the Bronx, New York. Carleton Gordon, a longtime financial services executive, was named the principal at a tough school in Brooklyn in the fall of 2003. And after just a short time, some New Leaders have moved from assistant principal to the leadership spot in their schools.

However, these are the exceptions. Only 7 (out of 47) New Leaders have been hired to run traditional neighborhood schools. One problem is that, as it turns out, there isn't really that much of a numerical shortage of principals in the four cities--Chicago, New York, Washington, and the Bay Area--where New Leaders currently operates training programs. Principalships don't open up all that often. And when they do, these school districts receive tons of applications from insiders with more experience in education.

For instance, New York City may need to fill 150 open slots each year in a system with more than 1,200 schools. Program founder Schnur estimates that there are well over a thousand qualified candidates. Schnur says that there were only 60 to 70 genuine openings in Chicago this year, with about 65 applications for each position.

It is not just a numbers game though. The fact is that school district administrators and teachers have not wholly embraced the New Leaders concept. They tend to believe that the principal is also the instructional leader and should therefore have significant classroom experience. 'Certainly, experience in other professions brings a perspective that could be a plus,' says Deborah Lynch, president of the Chicago teacher union. 'But so little teaching experience really makes me wonder if that's enough for a person to really get to know instructional improvement and school leadership.'

Even the New Leaders candidates agree that this is somewhat of a disadvantage. 'I might have wanted a few more years in the classroom from the curriculum side,' says Kelly Wilson, a New Leaders graduate who holds an MBA and has a background in TV production. 'We're being developed as curriculum leaders, but I probably needed more exposure to that.'

The New Leaders training, while intense, will not make them curriculum experts. They get enough training and experience to talk the talk and are expected to learn along the way. And so, despite the widely acknowledged need for better-trained principals, reports of shortages, and waves of retirees, New Leaders candidates can end up seeming green. 'Everybody just wants experience,' says one Chicago school administrator who has observed several of the principal searches where New Leaders fellows were interviewed. 'The bottom line is that schools want someone to run the school, not just theories.'

There are also cultural and stylistic conflicts that can complicate the relationship between nontraditional principals and career educators. Winning trust at a new school--what New Leaders tend to call 'gaining entry'--is a key challenge, especially for those who have spent most of their careers outside of schools.

Danny Kramer, for example, had a few run-ins with other teachers during his residency year that a more experienced administrator might have avoided. 'Danny started with us before the school year started and stayed with us the whole year,' says Armstrong Elementary principal Arline Hersh. 'He put his foot into it occasionally and learned that way,' she says. 'But that's part of the process, learning how to extricate yourself gracefully.'

There are also those who, threatened and offended by the notion of programs like New Leaders, question the fundamental legitimacy of bringing in outsiders. 'Why should we think someone would be an effective principal just because they were once a student?' asked Jill Levy, president of the 5,500-member Council of School Supervisors and Administrators in New York, last year. Her organization has vociferously opposed Chancellor Joel Klein's efforts to revamp principal training in New York City.

Conservative Hiring

New York is actually a bright spot in the New Leaders portfolio. Three quarters of the 2003 graduates of the New York program were selected to lead schools--a big increase from the previous year, when just two of eight became principals. Chicago has been more difficult to break into. In the program's first year, just one New Leaders graduate was tapped to run a school; two more have moved up to the top job since then. The share remains below 50 percent for the 2003 crop of New Leaders.

The disparity at least partly reflects the sheer size of the New York school district and thus the greater number of openings it has to fill. But the actual mechanisms for hiring principals in each city may provide a more likely explanation.

In New York it is largely up to district administrators to hire and assign principals. By contrast, in Chicago each individual local school council makes its own hiring decision. These councils, made up of parents, teachers, and community members, can be advised by the district. But the decision is, in the main, the council's to make.

Making the situation more difficult, roughly three out of four New Leaders in Chicago come from outside education--reflecting a priority expressed by the Chicago board of education, says Schnur.

The effects on the hiring process in Chicago are many. Local councils may not be familiar with the still-new New Leaders program, creating an enormous marketing challenge. With their strong ties to the community, local councils may also be more inclined to hire an inside person--an assistant principal, interim principal, or someone else from the community. And the principal contracts, set at terms of four years, make it very hard to remove someone if a decision goes awry.

'It is hard to get these people hired,' says John Ayers, executive director of Leadership for Quality Education, a Chicago education reform group that has worked with New Leaders and supports its efforts. 'Local school councils tend to be surprisingly conservative.'

Bernard Lacour, a longtime school reformer who works with local school councils and consults with New Leaders on placement issues, believes that the obstacles thrown up by council dynamics and the predisposition for experience may be exacerbated by system politics, the advantages of incumbency, and fear among local councils that their candidates will be challenged by the board of education and their authority taken away from them.

Lacour notes that candidates who have not been administrators or who come from outside education frequently make it to the interview stage but rarely get hired or placed in the Chicago system. Only in rare cases is someone's newness and lack of strong affiliation with the school system a real advantage. Sometimes council members don't even know who has applied for the job, he says. 'What we need is a process that is less daunting and procedural.'

Heading Charters

Not surprisingly, one result is that a substantial number of New Leaders end up running charter schools, small schools, start-ups, or education organizations rather than traditional schools, especially in Chicago.

Take Kelly Wilson. She was the second New Leader to do her residency at a small but well-known school, Ariel Community Academy, located on the south side of Chicago. Her predecessor had been hired as an assistant principal at Ariel, but before the year was even over, Wilson became executive director of a school-based teacher-training program in Chicago. She was the second New Leader to hold this position.

Opinions vary about whether this is a good outcome for graduates of New Leaders. Wilson and others say that having effective leadership in urban school systems is important, regardless of where that leadership is located. But sending too many New Leaders into alternative schools could easily create the impression that the program is not well suited for mainstream schools or that the school system is not ready and willing to hire even the most capable candidates if they enter through alternative routes. After all, imagine what would have happened if Teach for America, the storied program that places talented college graduates into low-income schools, had sent many of its members into charter schools.

In fact, many New Leaders would rather work in a traditional environment. 'I'd love to work in a traditional school,' says Kramer, who is now serving as an assistant principal at Clinton Elementary School. 'But that's a hard nut to crack, to get the [school councils] to interview you.'

Despite these difficulties, New Leaders already seems to be making an impact, both directly and indirectly. Evidence from the 2002-03 school year, while minimal, suggests that schools with New Leaders fellows at the helm outperformed other schools with first-year principals in reading and math improvements and in reduced percentages of failing students.

At the same time, there has been an enormous increase in attention toward new ways of recruiting, training, and placing principals, at least some of which can fairly be attributed indirectly to New Leaders. New Leaders has 55 residents in training this year, has expanded to Washington, D.C., and will be expanding to Memphis, Tennessee, this summer. Moreover, the organization was recently named one of the top 20 organizations that are changing the world by Fast Company magazine. In the meantime, other efforts to set up fast-track principal training programs dot the nation, and in-depth residency components are increasingly common. The New York, Chicago, and Boston school systems have all initiated or adapted school leadership programs that have key elements in common with New Leaders.

Befriending the System

Nevertheless, New Leaders will need to find more success in placing its graduates if it is to remain a viable model for improving the management of regular public schools. This presents no small challenge. In the end, hiring a nontraditional principal may be considered more of a risk than hiring teachers or superintendents with nontraditional backgrounds--two related trends that have swept the nation over the past decade.

For starters, compared with the principal, a teacher has an important but relatively small role in the overall well-being of a school. Principals and administrators may be more willing to 'take a chance' with a single 4th-grade class than risk the health of an entire school on a candidate with little experience in education. Furthermore, with the proliferation of alternative certification and programs like Teach for America, the practice of hiring teachers without formal degrees in education or classroom experience is fairly well established. Teaching, unlike the principalship, is also often an entry-level job that requires little previous experience aside from student teaching. The only real difference between a Teach for America teacher and a regular teacher is the nature of their training.

Similarly, the trend toward bringing in outsiders to run school districts is now at least a decade old. Superintendents with backgrounds in business, the military, or government are hired more for their forceful personalities and management skills than for their knowledge of instruction. They can arguably rely on the veteran educators within their systems to provide instructional leadership, while school principals need to be involved more directly in the process of upgrading the curriculum and monitoring the performance of teachers. By contrast, entering a role that involves directly managing professionals, like teachers, is tough to nearly impossible in any field where a candidate does not have significant experience. After all, how many newspaper editors did not do significant time in the reporting trenches? How many law firms' managing partners were not once first-year associates?

The lessons from the Chicago experience are clear and are already being implemented, according to Schnur. 'We need to become more aggressive earlier in the year about helping nontraditional candidates access networks that can help them and in helping them understand the climate of the school system,' he says. Last year, 'We didn't invest enough time and energy into this part of the process early enough.' This year the program has started networking earlier in the process and beefed up efforts to make sure that, when the time comes, New Leaders fellows are not just ready to take leadership positions, but are also welcomed by the school system.

REMEMBERING ALDO PERSON ONCE ENROLLED IN LEOPOLD'S CLASS FONDLY RECALLS FATHER OF WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT ... AND OF BEING STUNNED TO LEARN ABOUT HIS DEATH.(SPORTS) - The Capital Times

PORTAGE -- April 21, 1948 was a sad day for generations of people who enjoy and appreciate the great outdoors.

That was the day that Aldo Leopold suffered a fatal heart attack while helping a neighbor fight a grass fire on the farm adjacent to Leopold's 'Shack' on land near Portage. Leopold had been working on his land while the University of Wisconsin was closed for spring break and had seen the approaching smoke and went to the aid of his neighbor.

Irwin J. Ten Haken was one of the students enrolled in Leopold's Wildlife Ecology class that semester, and the following week professor Joe Hickey walked into the classroom and announced that Leopold had died.

'That Monday morning, Leopold's dog was on the campus sniffing everybody, trying to find out where Aldo was,' Ten Haken said. Leopold's dog, a German short-hair pointer, often accompanied Leopold to class.

'We were all stunned,' Ten Haken said. 'I really felt bad when we lost him. What a genius,' he said.

Hickey took over and taught the class for remainder of the semester.

Ten Haken, now 82, was from Cedar Grove and had served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a flight engineer on a B-24 in the Pacific Theatre. He flew 51 missions from the same airfield where the late Richard Bong was stationed.

After returning from the war, he came to Madison in February of 1946 to major in soil science, with a minor in agronomy. He married his wife, Jane, in 1947.

'I really wanted some wildlife management classes and my advisor, professor Robert Muckenhirn, approached Leopold for special permission for me to attend his class,' Ten Haken said.

Leopold's program was only for graduate students, but Ten Haken was one of a handful of undergraduates allowed to take the class, perhaps because Leopold placed emphasis on soil conservation and thought a soils student could promote wildlife management during his career.

'That class was one of the best I've ever taken,' Ten Haken said. 'He was very informal yet he had a world of experience from out west that he related to us. He really wanted to get his thoughts across to us.

'He often wore a patch over one eye, following surgery, but he'd stand there with his pipe and prose would come out of him. He talked like he wrote.

'He talked about his experiences on the Kaibab Plateau, which is when I learned that deer management was important,' Ten Haken said. 'I knew then that we really had to shoot does.'

Ten Haken remembers an experience when he watched a squirrel scamper across a telephone wire with a young baby squirrel holding on around the adult's neck. He was intrigued by what he saw and reported it to Leopold later that week in class, because he'd never seen it before and Leopold was interested in the observation.

'He got his little memo pad and asked my name again and made a note of the observation. He wanted all the data, and would gain knowledge wherever he could,' Ten Haken said.

Ten Haken remembers Leopold's demeanor. 'He was so common, yet so knowledgeable.'

'He really wanted to get the word out and help you understand things,' Ten Haken added. 'You couldn't help but like the guy, because he treated you like a human being. He was special, which is why all the graduate students were there, but we never realized that he would be world renown.'

Ten Haken graduated in 1949 and worked as a District Conservationist for the U.S. Soil Conservation Service in Waupaca and Columbia counties in Wisconsin, and in Manistee and Escanaba, Mich. He moved to Portage in 1967, ironically only a few miles from where the Leopold Shack is located, and retired in 1980.

'I used his philosophies about land management all my life,' Ten Haken said. 'For example, I learned about deer management, which was a big argument in Lower Michigan, the U.P. and here in Wisconsin. His thoughts, that you've got to shoot does and manage deer populations, were with me all the time.

'I never heard 'Irky' talk about anyone as much as he talked about Leopold,' Jane Ten Haken said about her husband. 'He was so impressed with him. He passed that philosophy on to our children and our grandchildren, and they have all read 'A Sand County Almanac.' '

When Ten Haken took his final exam in the class, Hickey allowed Jane, who was waiting at the back of the classroom for Irwin, to read some of Leopold's unpublished original manuscripts that eventually were published as 'A Sand County Almanac.'

Oree Banks

Coach Oree Banks came to West Virginia State in 1977 after havingcoached at Coahoma Community College in Mississippi and SouthCarolina State. Previously, he was the assistant coach at theUniversity of Wisconsin, Grambling State University, the Universityof South Carolina and the University of Virginia.

In the seven years as the head coach at State, Banks had fourwinning seasons and compiled a record of 32-36-1. In three years,Banks built the Yellow Jackets into the West Virginia ConferenceSouthern Division Champions and earned a berth in the Coal Bowl.

In January of 1995, Banks' career reached its peak when he wasinducted into the NAIA National Hall of Fame in the Coach Categoryin Dallas, Texas.

Banks also is a lecturer regarding drug education, traveling thecountry speaking to students about drug awareness.

Marshall L. Berger

Marshall L. Berger, a native of Martinsville, Va., was recruitedby West Virginia State College to play football in 1973.

During Marshall's four years at WVSC, he was a three-yearletterman. He led the team in sacks for two years. He was also amongteam leaders in tackles. Marshall was named WVIAC Player of Weeknumerous times throughout his career.

Marshall continued his leadership off the field, currentlyserving as director of the James H. 'Tiger' Morton Juvenile Centerin Dunbar. He has worked in the juvenile correction system for 34years and is the founder of the Juvenile Detention PreventionProgram.

Charles 'Pat' Clark

Charles 'Pat' Clark entered West Virginia State University in thefall of 1984. He is a graduate of Duval High School inGriffithsville, where he participated in football, track & field,baseball, and basketball. He was an All-State and All-Conferencelinebacker-fullback in football and qualified for the state trackmeet in the 100-yard dash.

Clark was an All-Conference linebacker in the WVIAC and astandout of the 1984 WVSC football team, a team that is referred tofrequently as one the best in the history of West Virginia Statefootball.

A four-year starter and four-year captain of the team, Patgraduated with a B.S. degree in Health, Safety, and PhysicalEducation in 1988. He went on to Marshall University where hereceived his master's degree in safety management in 1990.

James E. Cullop Jr.

James E. Cullop was born in Elkridge and graduated fromMontgomery High School in 1953. He enrolled at West Virginia StateCollege in the fall of 1959, with the help of Coach Art Burris. In1960, WVSC won the WVIAC Swimming and Diving Championship for thefirst time in school history. The team also competed in the NAIAswimming championship in Detroit. This swimming team was elected tothe WVSC All-Academic Team every year of competition.

Edward 'Magoo' Davis Jr.

Ed Davis was born in the Letroit Park area of Washington, D.C.Before attending State, he graduated from Dunbar High School. Duringhis tenure at Dunbar he played forward and this team defeatednationally ranked Cardinal-Gibbons of Baltimore.

Davis was also very active in the community, attending thehistoric Florida Avenue Baptist Church and working with the D.C.Department of Recreation.

After receiving several scholarship offers, he chose WVSC. AtState, Ed became known as 'Magoo,' a name that would follow himthrough the rest of his life.

After WVSC, he obtained a master's degree in educationadministration and his Advanced Certificate of Graduate Studies inEducational Technology and Learning Systems.

Later, he taught and coached in the D.C. and Montgomery PublicSchool system for 28 years.

After 16 seasons as a collegiate head coach, Ed Davis has a 312-154 overall record. His tenure is highlighted with severalchampionships and numerous 'Coach of the Year' awards.

Gregory D. Epps Sr.

Dr. Gregory D. Epps Sr. is the executive assistant to thepresident at West Virginia State University.

Epps received a bachelor's degree in education from WVSU, amaster's degree from Marshall University and a doctorate from WestVirginia University. He also is a recent graduate of the BusinessManagement Institute at Cornell University, the College ManagementInstitute at the University of Kentucky and the Executive LeadershipProgram at Hampton University.

While a student at WVSU, Epps was an active member of the trackteam. He was the assistant track coach for two years, winning theconference championship in 1982; one-year letterman and co-captainof cross country; track team captain for two years and co-captainfor one; lettered for four years; All-Conference for four years andAll-Conference awards for five; Conference Team Champion for oneyear; Conference Team Runner-up for two years and placed fourth andsecond in the 400-meter conference championships.

Floyd S. Goff

Goff was first recognized for excellence of four years sustainedperformance in his senior year at West Virginia State College fortwo sports. The Citation of Outstanding Athletic Achievements inFootball and Baseball was issued during his senior year.

After graduation, he assisted in raising money for the college,recruiting and serving as an ambassador for WVSC. He was affiliatedwith the Pittsburgh Pirate baseball farm system and served as ateacher, football, basketball and baseball coach.

He also served in the Army, was director of The Department ofEmployment Services for Washington, D.C., under three mayors andserved as superintendent of the Crispus Attucks Youth Build CharterSchool.

Community service awards include: The Humanitarian Award, Who'sWho in Government Services, Honor Graduate in his Military PoliceAcademy Class and the Ethiopian/Indochinese Community Service Award.

Most of all, he has kept God first in his life.

William P. 'Pat' Matthews

Pat Matthews was recruited by Coach Art Burris to West VirginiaState College, where he was a starting guard on the undefeatedjunior varsity team coached by Bob Maxwell, who served as the headbaseball coach. Highlights in his freshman season includedsignificant roles in wins at Huntington against Marshall Universityin both basketball and baseball.

In baseball, Matthews started at second base his freshman season,shortstop in both his sophomore and junior years and then settled inat third base his senior year, when he attained First-Team All-WVIAC honors.

John D. Thurman

Thurman attended West Virginia State College from 1982 to 1984,when he participated in track and football. He assisted in leadingthe track team to conference championships in 1982 and 1983. Thurmanwas the conference champion in the 200-meter dash and the 100-meterdash and also ran first leg on both the 4x100 meter relay and 800-meter relay, where WVSC won both conference relays. Thurmanparticipated in the NAIA College Track and Field Championship andwas ranked in the top 10 in the nation in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash in Charleston.

Walter M. Wilkerson Sr.

After graduation from Gary District High School in 1963,Wilkerson enrolled at West Virginia State College while working fulltime at FMC and later Union Carbide.

Wilkerson has spent many years volunteering with children inteaching, coaching and math tutoring. He has worked with the LocalSub-Area Planning Committee and received the Community Service andVolunteer Award in 1992.

The majority of his volunteer hours have been working for the 'W'Club. He worked closely with Alumni Affairs Director Fred Bailey andAthletic Director Robert Maxwell, who were both instrumental insetting up all programs for the 'W' Club in 1978.

Jeff C. Woods

Woods graduated from West Virginia State College with a degree insociology, Magna Cum Laude, in 1975. He was designated aDistinguished Military Student and Graduate and was commissioned asecond lieutenant in the United States Army. He earned a JurisDoctorate, Magna Cum Laude, from Howard University Law School in1979. He was Case Notes editor of The Howard Law Journal.

Woods served as a clerk with the West Virginia Supreme Court ofAppeals and acting director of the West Virginia Magistrate Courtsystem.

Tommy Barber's first appearance in the U.S. Amateur ended with an early exit Tuesday, when the Burbank teen-ager and grandson of 1961 PGA champion Jerry Barber finished 84-81-165 in medal play to miss the cut for sudden-death match play that starts today.

His second-round total on the Upper Course at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J., left Barber 19 shots back of the final qualifying score for match play.

Barber put himself in a deep hole in Monday's first round of medal play, shooting 42-42-84 on the more-difficult Lower Course to tie for 300th in the 313-man field, 17 shots off the lead.

The June graduate of Sherman Oaks Notre Dame High, who will play next season for College of the Canyons, earned his berth in the centennial Amateur championship by tying USC freshman John Ray Leary for medalist at 6-under-par 136 in qualifying at Hillcrest Country Club.

Leary survived medal play at Baltusrol with a 76-69-145 total.

--Waldorf-Lehman clinic: Duffy Waldorf of Valencia, college player of the year at UCLA and a three-time PGA Tour winner who tied for 54th at last week's PGA Championship, will team with 1996 PGA Tour player of the year Tom Lehman to put on a Sept. 30 golf clinic and nine-hole exhibition at Robinson Ranch.

Eddie Merrins, Waldorf's coach at UCLA, also will be on hand.

The event is a fund-raiser for Waldorf's church, Bethlehem Lutheran in Canyon Country, providing financial support the annual church Christmas program.

--Murray Classic: Bill McCoy, Jason Pomerantz, Vic Karidakes, Mark McClure and celebrity Rick Dees formed the winning team in Monday's second annual Jim Murray Memorial Golf Classic at Lakeside Country Club.

The tournament, named after the late Pulitzer Prize winner and longtime sports columnist, raises college scholarship funds for journalists who are selected on the basis of a national essay contest.

This year's Murray scholarship recipients included Adam Karon (UCLA) and Ryan Pearson (USC). Others were Anitra Budd (Minnesota), Justin Doom (Arizona State), Emily Gresh (Trinity, Murray's alma mater), David Longolucco (St. Bonaventure) and Katie Tiernan (Missouri).

--Konjoyan to Camarillo Springs: Mike Konjoyan, who has been general manager at American Golf-operated Scholl Canyon in Glendale for four years, will switch to the same position at American Golf's Camarillo Springs course on Monday.

Konjoyan made the most of his final month at Scholl, hitting his hole-in-one at the July men's club tournament.

--Moon wins AJGA event: UCLA-bound Roy Moon of Simi Valley shot 70-78-69-217 at par-72 Twelve Bridges Golf Club in Lincoln, Calif., and win the boys' division of the American Junior Golf Association's RS Investment Management Junior Classic.

Moon, who won Marmonte League individual titles as a junior and senior at Royal High, wound up two strokes ahead of runner-up and fellow Marmonte Leaguer Brian O'Flaherty (75-69-75-219), who starts his senior season at Westlake High next month.

The city of Taylor issued the following news release:

The City of Taylor's management association has presented its sixth annual scholarships to two deserving high school graduates from Taylor.

The Taylor Governmental Management and Administrative Employees Association (TGM & AEA) presented the $750 scholarships to Christopher McNeely and Steven Gorgon, both 2008 graduates of Gabriel Richard High School. The scholarships were formally awarded June 17 during the Taylor City Council meeting.

Christopher McNeely, son of Michele and Harold McNeely, has been accepted at and will attend Central Michigan University in the fall. He plans to pursue a degree in sports medicine. While attending Gabriel Richard, Christopher was active in varsity football and baseball. He has been a carrier for The News-Herald Newspapers since May 2003 and is currently employed at Adkins & Sons Inc. Dr. Daniel Webster, the assistant principal at Gabriel Richard, said Christopher 'knows how to develop sound reasoning skills and analyze issues affecting our society... he has been active in our outreach programs, devoting much time, interest, and concern to those less fortunate than himself... this flows directly from his deep sense of values, his compassion for others and his desire to make our world a better place...he is outgoing, energetic and a friendly person who has made a positive impact on our school.'

Steven Gorgon, son of Terry and David Gorgon, has been accepted at Eastern Michigan University, Western Michigan University, Lake Superior State University and Wayne State University. He plans to pursue a degree in nursing. While attending Gabriel Richard, Steven earned a spot as goalie on the varsity hockey team in his freshman year. He has been an altar server at St. Cyril of Jerusalem Catholic Church (now Our Lady of the Angels) since early grade school and is an officer in the Altar Society. Steven is employed at Jo-Ann Fabrics and CQC Landscaping. Dr. Webster, the assistant principal, described Steven as 'happy, responsible and reliable...he is an outstanding young man and is an excellent role model for our underclassman to emulate... He is an intelligent, mature, well-rounded individual who understands the balance between academics, community services, athletics and personal enjoyment.'

The Taylor Governmental Management and Administrative Employees Association is composed of city department heads, directors, managers and administrative employees. In 2003, TGM & AEA members voted to demonstrate their community pride by using their own funds to form the scholarship program. Two $750 scholarships are awarded annually, typically to Taylor residents from area high schools. A committee of TGM & AEA members reviews the applications and makes recommendations to the executive board. Megan Etue, Rob Pare and Jeff Sovitch were the 2008 application reviewers.

Rhenwrick at IUPUI

Isabell Rhenwrick is a point guard and shooting guard studying sports management at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis.

Rhenwrick, a 2005 graduate of West Side High School, led the Lady Cougars last March with 16 points and two assists in a second-place finish to North Central during the state championship basketball game.

She was a member of the National Honor Society at West Side and played volleyball.

Award nominee

Saundra Horne, RN program chairwoman of practical nursing at the Gary campus of Ivy Tech Community College Northwest, has been named the Ivy Tech Northwest President's Award nominee.

The award is given annually to one faculty member in each of Ivy Tech's 14 regions that has shown excellence in teaching and community service.

As the President's Award nominee, Horne is automatically nominated to represent Ivy Tech Northwest for the statewide Glenn Sample Award, to be presented in June.

She has been a full-time faculty member in the Health Sciences division since fall 1988.

Bethune pilot program

Bethune Early Childhood Development Center has started its first early childhood intervention pilot program.

The remainder of Session 1 dates are today and March 23 and 24; Session 2 dates are April 27 and 28, May 4, 5, 11, 12, 18 and 19. The program gives parents and children the chance to bond and interact. It transitions 2-year-olds into the prekindergarten setting.

After completing the four-week session, the child will be enrolled at the center for the upcoming school year.

Effective July 1, state law required students to be immunized as protection against hepatitis B infections.

Literacy workshop

Elementary school educators in Northwest Indiana will learn about the latest developments in improving children's literacy on March 21 at Valparaiso University's Christopher Center for Library and Information Resources.

Kristina Smekens, a literacy consultant and president of Smekens Education Solutions, will present the workshop's keynote talk 'Building Readers and Writers: Seeing the Big Picture.' Smekens will discuss components of good reading and writing, how to demystify good writing and understanding the reciprocal nature of reading and writing.

Session presenters include faculty from VU's Department of Education and Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Gary Community Schools, East Porter County Schools and Franklin Township Community Schools.

Cancer scholarships

The American Cancer Society Great Lakes Division college scholarship program is accepting applications for the 2006-2007 school year.

Applications are due by 4 p.m. CDT Tuesday, April 18.

Since 1997, the American Cancer Society, Great Lakes Division Foundation has proudly supported young cancer survivors with $1,000 scholarships as they pursue career goals.

To date, more than 300 first-time scholarships and 200 renewal scholarships have been awarded to students in the Great Lakes area of Indiana and Michigan.

Scholarships are awarded annually based on academic performance, community service and leadership, among other criteria, and may be renewable up to three more years.

To qualify, an applicant must be a cancer survivor age 20 or younger (as of April 18), a U.S. citizen and legal resident of Indiana or Michigan; attending or planning to attend an accredited college or university in Indiana or Michigan in fall 2006.

The Aviation Scholarship Foundation will award a $5,000 Harold Hurd Airplane Scholarship in October.

DeVry scholarships

Rotary scholarships

Rotary Northern Indiana District 6450 has applications for the 2007 to 2009 Rotary World Peace scholarships.

They are for study at one of the seven Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution to obtain a two-year, master's-level degree in international relations, peace studies, conflict resolution and related areas.

Rotary scholarships are for two academic years and provide funding for round-trip transportation, tuition and fees, room and board, and other limited expenses. Applications are due by March 31.

Creative Communication is conducting its spring essay and poetry contest, 'Celebration of Young Writers.' More than $3,000 in prizes will be given to poets, writers and schools in Indiana. HUBER HEIGHTS -- When she isn't scattering tenpins at a nearbybowling establishment, you can usually find Janelle Petry at apeewee football field absorbing coaching techniques.

'I'm just an assistant now and not involved in the X's and 0's,'said the 30-year-old Wayne High School graduate (1996). 'But I'mlearning and would love nothing better than to coach one of theseteams.'

If her football enthusiasm comes anywhere near her lethal effortson the lanes, her grid aspirations will be fulfilled -- and thensome.

Petry, a four-year varsity softball player at Wayne, has pitchedperfection on the bowling scene. She has rolled no less than sixperfect 300s and narrowly missed a seventh when she spared in theopening frame and struck out the rest of the way -- 11 straight --to settle for a 290.

'I have been bowling since I was 4 years old, and my parents(Kristen and Frank Petry of Huber Heights) were active and excellentbowlers,' said the rookie football mentor. 'I guess it's in thegenes.

'In fact, both mom and dad both had 299 games.'

A family interest

Petry also confessed her interest in peewee football can beattributed to her niece and nephew. The niece is Lexia Erisman, afourth-grader at Pathway Charter School in Dayton, who is acheerleader in the Huber Heights Youth Football Conference, and thenephew, Pathway first-grader Skyler Erisman, who's an offensivelineman for the Bantam White team in the HHYFC.

And how did a nonparent woman pull off the rarity of getting on acoaching staff?

'I went to a preseason meeting, and when they asked for volunteerdads to assist the head coaches, I stood up and asked, 'Does an auntcount?' '

Thus, the pigskin career of this bowling bomber began and whileher assistant role is confined to calisthenics, distributing playsand helping to keep things organized, she said, 'I just love workingwith the kids and hope someday to be a peewee head coach. Wouldn'tthat be great?'

Jeff Murphy, head coach of the Bantam White team, said, 'Janellehas been a major help -- and I doubt if there are any other womenassistants in the program.

'She keeps all our stats and roster records and has a goodrapport with the kids,' said the former Wayne defensive back and '96grad. 'She really helps getting things organized.'

The perfect game

Petry, who is averaging 216 in league bowling, rolled her first300 two weeks after her 21st birthday at Poelking Woodman Lanes. Shelater rolled a second 300 at Woodman but the other four perfectgames were racked up at Poelking Marian Lanes in Huber Heights.

The most recent ABC ringworthy effort was recorded a year ago(Oct. 18) at Poelking Marian.

'My main goal right now is bowling my first 800 series, and theclosest I've come to that was a 793 last year,' said Petry, whoworks as a team leader at Dayton CareSource, a medicare managingoffice.

Petry, a 200-average bowler since she was 16, said she bowled atWayne 'but the sport wasn't yet a part of the athletic curriculum,so we competed in a high school traveling league.'

She earned a bachelor's degree in business management in '05 atthe University of Phoenix on Poe Avenue, graduating with a 3.96 GPA.

DISTANCE EDUCATION: MBA Programs Go Global via the Internet; University of Dallas Graduate School of Management Has No Borders

The MBA, Master's of Business Administration, until recently one of the most traditional graduate school programs, is being transformed by the global economy and the worldwide reach of the Internet. Colleges and universities throughout the United States, including the venerable University of Chicago as well as upstarts such as Jones International University, are offering all or part of the MBA degree online to students who study around the clock thousands of miles away from campus.

Experts say that the change is inevitable as business schools search for new sources of revenue. According to a recent article in The New York Times, enrollments in MBA programs at most top schools have dropped due to the strong economy and to demographic shifts that have produced a smaller number of people in their 20s. Without new students from abroad, many programs will experience steeper declines in enrollments.

Some business schools have actually set up overseas operations in Asia and Europe. Others have chosen the Internet. One of the most innovative in offering a full degree online is the University of Dallas Graduate School of Management (GSM). It currently offers four online MBA degrees -- Telecommunications Management, Information Technology, Sport Management, and E-Commerce, the last launched in the fall of 1999 and the largest of its kind in the U.S.

This year, the UD Graduate School of Management was awarded a $322,500 grant from eCollege.com to develop more courses and to market the programs currently offered through the University's Internet Master of Business Administration (IMBA).

eCollege.com is a leading provider of technology and services that enable colleges and universities to offer an online environment for distance and on-campus learning.

'This is what the power of the Internet has brought to higher education -- the ability to offer high quality education to those who would otherwise not have access to it,' said Charles Schneider, chief operating officer of eCollege.com.

'The Internet is making courses and degree programs available to anyone, from anywhere at anytime. The technology provides the interaction between the students and the teacher and between the students and their classmates, an experience very similar to the traditional classroom.'

However, the students enrolled in the IMBA program are anything but traditional. The University recruits worldwide and has marketed the program to a customer base that includes the military, corporate travelers, and working mothers.

'We have students who spend half their work life flying from one country to another. We accommodate them by providing courses that can be studied on a laptop, on the Internet, through video and e-mail and satellite transmission,' says Dr. Paula Ann Hughes, dean of the Graduate School of Management.

Recruiting those students is the job of Roxanne del Rio, GSM director of admissions. Her responsibilities are split between managing the admissions department and creating new markets for the University. It is a job that requires a lot of travel, especially to the Middle East, Latin America, and Mexico. 'We rely on the economy of the world to direct us to different markets of the world, including Asia, Europe, Latin America, Mexico, and the Middle East. Within each country, there are pockets that we consider a viable source of potential students,' she said.

During recruiting trips, Roxane del Rio says she works a 12- to 14-hour day. 'You have to be motivated and have stamina to be a recruiter. You must be able to make an impact and sell your university in the time allotted. You are `on' 24 hours a day,' she noted. 'There is really no time to rest or relax on these trips.'

On the road, Del Rio's typical schedule involves meetings with various constituencies that are sources of potential students. Sometimes she meets with human resource directors of major corporations who might want to send employees to the United States for an MBA degree. She also discusses the possibility of UD's executive training program for employees, which are short-term certificate programs that can be delivered via the Internet or at the corporate site by one of the GSM professors.

Del Rio checks in with University officials who might be interested in starting a semester exchange program for students or faculty who want U.S. experience or have a particular field of interest.

But the bulk of her efforts is aimed at organized student fairs in each country, with the public invited free of charge to access information about the MBA program.

'At these fairs, we handle 400-700 inquiries during the course of the day,' she said. 'It's a good way for us to talk personally to students and distribute brochures. Most importantly, we build a data base on these students so that we can follow up on them.'

The Graduate School of Management has been particularly successful in recruiting minorities and women, enrollment segments that have increased dramatically during her tenure. Currently, the University of Dallas has more than 2,100 students in the MBA program. Of that total, 25 percent are minority, and 41 percent are female. International students representing 61 countries comprise 25 percent of the program.

Part of the success in attracting these populations is attributed to alliances created with minority not-forprofits and community organizations.

'We have partnered with the National Society of Hispanic MBAs, National Black MBA Association, Hispanic Women's Network, and Hispanic Bankers Association, just to name a few,' she said.

Del Rio's background makes her especially effective in recruiting a diverse student body. Born and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas, she is a descendant of Mexican heritage. She became interested in this line of work 20 years ago when she was a student assistant in the Health Service Department and the Counseling and Testing Department at Del Mar College. 'I found my passion for working with students grew from this experience as an undergraduate,' she said.

Del Rio eventually received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Texas A&M and a master's in public administration from the University of North Texas.

She has worked as a consultant to the Economic Development Center at the University of Texas at Arlington and taught in a 'special needs' program in South Texas, at an elementary school.

Del Rio maintains an active presence in professional organizations. She is a cofounder of the Dallas/Fort Worth chapter of the National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NHSMBA) and has been a chapter vice president of education and director-at-large. She is currently an educational consultant for the NSHMBA National Scholarship.

A contributor to Tortilla Soup for the Soul, a collection of inspirational stories for Latinas, Del Rio is also a teacher for the Literacy Volunteers of America.

Her 'plate is full,' as the saying goes, and there are times when she feels that she is stretched too thin. 'It's a challenge for me to find enough time to complete projects, talk with students, recruit, volunteer for organizations, and network with colleagues,' she said.

But she adds that she loves having a job that allows her to use her talents creatively to help the University grow and to help students reach their educational goals.

The Application Process

Students who express interest in obtaining a degree through the IMBA program must complete the application process. Admissions requirements for the IMBA are consistent with those of the graduate school's traditional programs. Prospective students must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and meet two of the following requirements: an overall undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 on a scale of 4.0, a satisfactory score on the GMAT, five years or more of effective managerial or professional work experience.

International students and permanent residents must provide proof of proficiency in English by submitting TOEFL scores and must take the Focal Skills Test to determine English proficiency.

Although the coursework delivery method has changed, Internet classes are based on the same trimester calendar as other University programs. Courses follow a weekly schedule, with assignments due about seven days after being posted. All coursework, including projects and exams, takes place online, and all communication (student-to-student/student-to-professor) occurs via e-mail.

Enrollment is limited to 20-25. Prospective online students are cautioned that 'Internet classes are generally more difficult than on-campus classes because of the level of weekly participation and regularity of assignments, which are the basis of grades.' They advise students to be prepared to spend at least six to ten hours per week on coursework.

Colleges and universities that have adopted programs like UD's IMBA discover that the dot-EDU University can offer many benefits. It can reach more students by creating educational opportunities that cut across geographical boundaries. A virtual campus can free faculty from certain administrative details and allow them to focus more directly on teaching, providing insight and inspiring students. They might also have more time to spend on their personal research agendas and on consulting that expands their knowledge base and ultimately serves and benefits students.

In addition, student enrollment grows as the dot-EDU University attracts the nontraditional student, one with limited access to higher education due to professional and family commitments but one who is savvy about Internet technology and its possibilities. When these students are surveyed about their online experiences, they often report that they learn more, like it better, and even feel greater ties to one another than they did in a traditional setting.

But most of all, the online MBA serves as a very practical way of integrating business education into today's global market.

As Dean Paula Hughes says, 'The world is the laboratory where our students are making daily business decisions that impact the future of firms. We must give them on-the-job tools, and we must make them accessible outside the traditional classroom.'
